Battle of the Cleansing Oils

I've always been a fan of a cleansing oil; I've tried a few, but after finding the Superfacialist by Una Brennan Vitamin C oil and really loving it, I stayed loyal to it. Until recently, when the Body Shop introduced their new Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil, which the beauty blogging world has gone a little crazy for. I absolutely love both, but I thought I'd do another 'battle of' post to compare the two.

As you can see by how much it's been used, the Superfacialist by Una Brennan Vitamin C Brighten Skin Renew Cleansing Oil (mouthful) is my oldest. It's been well loved, and well used since buying a good few months ago. It has a really lovely citrus-y scent, and you only need a tiny amount applied to the face for it to dissolve every little scrap of make-up. It has rosehip, olive and grapeseed oil to nourish your skin whilst it's doing it, too. Of course, it doesn't have a pump which really is a pain, and can encourage waste, but I've always overlooked it as it just does the job so well.

Until, in walks The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil, with a pump. Again, it has lots of different oils inside to nourish the skin (almond, sunflower seed, and sesame seed) so may be better for those who Rosehip causes a bit of a reaction. It has a lovely scent, and just 2-3 pumps is needed to dissolve and remove every bit of make-up off the skin with the help of a flannel. It feels really lovely when you apply, and doesn't leave anything behind, no greasy feeling, nothing.

So, which is the winner? It's the Body Shop, sorry Superfacialist. I love you, but for some reason you leave a weird feeling in my eyes which occasionally stings for up to around 20 minutes afterwards. I've learnt recently this is due to the Vitamin C, but it makes my eyes water quite a lot, which isn't the nicest. And the Body Shop one has a pump, which means I don't waste any or spill it all down the sides of the bottle. Generally, it just works a little bit better. I like them both, but the Body Shop one just trumps it!

Have you tried either of these? Which was your favourite?

Au Naturale

Considering I'm normally about the bright lipsticks, blush and eyeliner, this little period is a bit odd for me. But, recently I've been favouring a more natural look; perhaps it's the nicer weather we've had a bit of. I've got a few favourite products that I've been loving using recently to help create this..

Starting off with base, my favourite and most suited to my skintone is MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NW13. This is the perfect shade for me, and gives a medium-heavy coverage without being too much, but covers every little flaw and imperfection. It has a natural, matte finish, and is just one of the best foundations I've tried. There's quite a few blushes I own which give such a pretty, natural flush of colour to the cheeks; My top three are Rimmel Pink Rose, No7 Honey, and Natural Collection Rosey Glow.

Urban Decay's Naked 3 Palette is my go-to palette, and you can create so many looks with this. My favourite is a neutral look with a slight smokiness to it, using some of the darker browns in the corner. I've never done a review of this as I figured everyone is sick of the sight of it, but I only have good things to say, I use it pretty much everyday. I've been using Soap & Glory Thick & Fast Mascara the past week or so and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's not the greatest on lengthening (not with my stubbly lashes, anyway), but the volume and thickness it gives is fantastic, and again it looks so natural.

For lips, there's a couple I've been wearing a lot. My (almost) perfect nude, is No7 Moisture Drench Lipstick in Romantic, which is a light nude with the slightest pink undertone. It's just a lovely everyday colour, and I love the formula of these too, they feel so moisturising on the lips. I've been going for my Korres Rose Lip Butter Stick a lot too, which with one or two little swipes give a really pretty sheer light red colour. I love the Korres lip butters, I really need to pick up a couple more shades.

What are your favourite products for a more natural look?

Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Daily Balancing Serum & Gel Lotion

Jurlique seem to have taken over my skincare routine; it originally started off with a little moisturiser from the Calendula Redness range, add in a cleanser and moisturiser, and now we're onto a serum and a gel moisturiser. These particular ones are from the latest collection, Rose Moisture Plus, all designed to combat dryness and dehydration, something I'm not 100% sure whether I really suffer with, but something I like to use products for, y'know, just in case..

I'll start with the serum, which coincidentally is my favourite of the two. The Rose Moisture Plus Daily Moisture Balancing Serum* is very lightweight, but packed full of anti-oxidants and hydrating ingredients to aid dryness and dehydration. Rosehip oil, Primrose oil and Green tea extract are to name a few, all which help to balance out the skin whilst hydrating and helping with any other ailments. I'm a big fan of Rosehip oil in particular, it just works wonders on any issues my skin is having, so I knew I'd love this immediately.

The bottle comes in a handy little pump, of which I only need one of to cover my entire face. Patted in, it sinks into the skin really quickly so I can pop on a moisturiser (if necessary) and start applying my make-up within a minute or so. I've been using this everyday since getting it a few weeks ago, and I've been really impressed by it.

The Rose Moisture Plus Revitalising Gel Lotion* is another lovely one from the range I've really been enjoying using. Similar to the serum, it has my favourite Rosehip oil with Primose oil in too, but it also has natural sources of hyaluronic acids, which is fantastic for injecting moisture back into the skin. This is unlike anything I've used, being a gel formula, but it's lovely, especially on warm summer mornings! I find on me it does take a little longer to sink in, so I generally don't use it when I'm wearing make-up, but probably depending on just how thirsty your skin is, it might lap it up.

Yet again, it's another fantastic range from Jurlique, who are fast becoming one of my favourite skincare brands. They have such a good range of products, and everything I've tried just works. Despite not really suffering from dryness or dehydration that I can tell of, every day after using these my skin feels balanced, looks brighter and feels nourished, I can't ask for better.

Have you tried anything from the Rose Moisture Plus range?

A New Favourite

I got my hands on the Ciate Dolls House collection a few months ago, but after deciding the matte formula wasn't quite for me, it sat on a shelf in my bedroom doing nothing but looking pretty. That was, until I finally remembered to pick up a top coat in my latest Boots trip, and decided to pull out a few shades to give a go with a top coat on top. I pulled out Baby Dolls, and it's fast become one of my all-time favourite polishes.

Being honest, I'm just a big peach fan. You can put most peach nail polishes in front of me and I'll love it. But this one just seem to be a bit different; it's a little lighter, and almost has a bit of a pink undertone, rather than leaning more to the coral orange side you see with some peach polishes. The formula is great, almost opaque in one coat but I like to add two. I've actually learnt to like it in matte too (I think it's wish the addition of a slight tan), but with a coat of a clear polish on top it looks really beautiful. I know it'll be my go-to polish this summer.

What polishes are you loving at the moment?

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I understand that the lyrics in the title of this song are referring to Christmas, but for me the best time of the year are the summer months. I spent my bank holiday buying new fresh flowers for my home and in my garden planting up some new ones I'd just bought. The weather was beautiful too so I sat outside for a while, although started going a bit red so had to go inside.

This is a bit of a non-descript post, but I couldn't resist photographing my peonies. They're definitely my favourite flowers with tulips, it's just a shame they don't seem to be around for very long as all in the UK. I got mine from Asda, which cost £4 for 5 flowers. I also added some spray carnations to my basket which I really love at the moment, they last so long too. I'm filling my house with plants and flowers and sorting out my front and back gardens which is making me to happy, everything looks so bright and cheery!

Do you love this time of year as much as me?

Testing, Testing, 1 2 3..

The other day I peered into my drawers, and half of what I could see where samples staring back at me. Somehow I've managed to amass a serious collection, and the majority of the time they get looked past when it comes to blog posts. In an effort to not only write more about different products but also use some of them up, I thought I'd start doing some round-up mosts of products in samples I've been loving a lot lately..

Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask:
I've been using this incredibly sparingly and not actually washing off the excess like they advise, because this stuff costs an incredible £93 per 60ml! I have a little tube in a 10ml size, making it over £15 for just this. I think if I had slightly older skin I'd probably notice more of a difference, but it does make me skin feel incredibly smooth and very plumped up after application. It's obviously not one I'd rebuy afterwards, but it's been nice to use anyway - buy it here.

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish:
This is one of my more recent ones, and one I've been really loving using since getting it a couple weeks ago. It's got a lovely thick consistency and does the job so well at removing all bits of make-up and leaving my skin fresh and cleansed. I love the scent too, which is a bit of a fruity mint mix - buy it here.

Percy & Reed Volumising No Oil Oil:
This little bottle ended up at the bottom of the depths of my hair drawer for quite some time, but I rediscovered it a few weeks ago. I love using oils on my hair, but occasionally with it being so fine it can feel weighed down and greasy quite quickly. This one is perfect as it's specifically for fine hair, so leaves my hair looking really sleek and shiny, with a little volume injected too - buy it here.

Korres Wild Rose 24 Hour Moisturising Cream:
Oh Korres, how I do love thee. Despite this being for dry skin, it works wonders on me in the mornings. It feels so creamy and sinks into the skin really nicely, and creates such a good base for make-up it's insane. I love the scent too, and it'll be a 100% repurchase when my sample is all used up - buy it here.

Caudalie Blackberry Hand & Nail Cream:
One of my favourite handcreams is all used up, *sob*. I managed to spread it out over a few months, but it's finally gone. It has a gorgeous light blackberry and sinks into the hands so nicely feeling them hydrated. You only need the tiniest amount too, and it just works - buy it here.

Have you tried any of these? What samples do you have on the go at the moment?

The Body Shop Haul

I've had a Body Shop wishlist on the go for quite some time now, so it seemed almost fate that a little email offering 40% off and free delivery popped into my inbox when I was just about to finally make an order. I got myself a couple things I've had my eye on for a while, a couple bits from a new collection and one little impulse buy, but I absolutely love everything.

The 3-in-1

It was only last week I blogged about how I fake a summer glow, and I've added another product into the mix. When I spent all my Boots points I noticed Soap & Glory cosmetics were on an offer too, so I added their Peach Party to my basket, which is a beautiful 3-in-1 shimmer palette.

I've mentioned before how I love multi-use products, and that's really the beauty of this one. Of course it can be swept over with a blusher brush and used around the cheeks and cheekbones, but each shade can be used separately too. It has a beautiful warm toned highlight with a few sections of a shimmery peach and pink to mix for a blush, and a shimmered copper tone for a contour shade. If you fancied getting creative you could even use the brown and lighter shades as an eyeshadow too.

Personally I prefer to just use it all over and it leaves a gorgeous glow on the skin and really lifts my complexion. I was a bit wary it might be too much on my pale complexion but it really looks lovely, and I'm sure it would suit many different skintones too. The pigmentation isn't the best of what I've tried, but being so shimmered I like that, it means I can't really go overboard and it just leaves a subtle peachy glow on the cheeks. The packaging is the classic Soap and Glory retro style, but feels great quality too. The plastic is sturdy and there's a nice big mirror inside, making it perfect for popping in your handbag.

I'm so happy I picked this up, I can see myself getting a lot of wear of this in the warmer months, and it's definitely being added to the rest of the products I'm loving at the moment that give my skin a pretty glow. It's another winner from Soap & Glory!

Have you tried this? What's your favourite product from Soap & Glory?

You Beauty CEW Limited Edition Box

You Beauty Discovery CEW Limited Edition Box

I'm a regular subscriber of the You Beauty Discovery boxes; for just £6.95 a month you can choose a couple of products that catch your eye the most, cutting out the disappointment some monthly subscription boxes give if you're not keen on certain items sent out. They quite often bring out a couple of Limited Edition boxes, the latest being a collaboration with the CEW awards 2014, and costs just £16.95.

Dr. Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Hair Treatment Serum:
I was so happy to see this in there as I recently missed out on it in one of the usual You Beauty boxes. It comes in a large 100ml bottle, and I'm always using serums and oils on my hair to help calm down any frizz and keep it nourished. This costs £14.99, so almost the entire value of the box already!

Glamglow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment Masque:
Again, something I was thrilled to see inside. These have been all over the beauty world the past couple of months, but costing almost £35 a tub it's one of those I sadly won't be buying the full size of, but I can't wait to give it a test and see what all the fuss is about. This is a 15ml sample tube, but even this costs over £10.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream:
I'm a big fan of everything from Elemis that I've tried, but as this is really anti-ageing (something at 23 I don't quite need yet!) I'll be giving this to my Mum. Again, it's a 15ml tube, but the 50ml costs £80!

Manuka Doctor Purified Bee Venom and Manuka Honey Skincare:
I've been using a couple skincare items with manuka honey in recently which have made such a big difference to my skin, so I love the look of this little set. There are three 3ml samples inside, a skin treatment serum, a targeted wrinkle filler (off to Mum also!) and a rejuvenating face mask. I can't wait to give these a little test, and they also pop inside a 25% off discount code if you like them enough to buy the full size.

L'Occitane Milk Concentrate with Almond Milk:
I think I let out a little squeal when I saw this inside! I absolutely love L'Occitane but I mostly stick to hand creams, so I'm really looking forward to trying this body cream. It comes in a cute little 50ml tub making it perfect for travel, you can buy these online for £11 a pop.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer:
This rose to fame a couple years ago, and I still haven't tried it! I now have two tubes of these though, so next time I fancy a pamper I'll be popping this pre-shampoo treatment on. This is a 40ml tube, which I believe costs around £8.

I think this is such a fantastic box, if you want to try some of the best brands out there this is definitely for you. Value isn't everything, but everything in the box comes to just under £100, so absolutely worth making a little purchase! They also add in a few discount codes for some of the brands which is a really lovely touch, as well as a little sample of Caudalie Divine Legs.

What's your favourite product inside the box?

Summer Hair Sorted

I did something I might live to regret last week; I spent all my Boots Advantage points. All those points I had been saving so I could treat myself to something expensive and technically, it'd be free, gone. It's been a bit of a tight month money-wise, but silly ol' me still found myself wandering into Boots and obviously being drawn in by various different things, the 3 for 2 on all Charles Worthington being one of them, and the Volume & Bounce Spray actually being in stock for once being the second.

Easy Beach Waves Hair Tutorial with Remington

I've never really been blessed with the nicest of natural hair, and as much as I would have loved to pull off the effortless bedhead look, it just looked a bit daft on me. Until, in comes the Remington Silk Waving Wand*. This has an almost flattened conicle wand which has been created so loose waves are now easier than ever to create. It has a temperature setting up to 220 degrees, and also comes with a little heat protectant pouch and glove, making it such a bargain at £34.99

I've worn my hair straight for months now as I've never been able to create an effortless look like this on myself, but the Silk Waving Wand makes it so easy. It literally takes around 5 minutes, and after a spray of Charles Worthington Texturising Spray I'm good to go! I created a little tutorial video to show just how easy it is, so I'd love for you to give it a quick watch and subscribe to my channel if you like it.

NARS Luxembourg Satin Lip Pencil

NARS are quickly becoming one of my most favourite brands; I still don't actually own a huge amount from them, but any time I fancy a cheeky little treat they're the first place I head to. After getting a couple of blushes I decided it was time to own some of their lip pencils, and after originally being torn between matte or satin, Luxembourg satin lip pencil really stood out to me.

Luxembourg is the perfect pink-hued red. I would have liked to lean slightly more on the pink side on me, but it's still a really lovely shade. The formula is just beautiful, really creamy and it just glides on leaving behind a seriously pigmented colour. The crayon style makes it really easy to apply all over, but I did experience a tiny bit of bleeding on me so a lip liner is necessary. It does last a good few hours when not eating or drinking, but being so creamy it does transfer when doing either of those. You also need to make sure you have a sharpener, as it's not one of those handy twist up ones.

The colour of this is just so gorgeous, and the moisturising formula has really won me over. At around £18 it's not the cheapest lip product ever either, but if you fancy treating yourself the Satin lip pencils are definitely something to consider. I love the look of Lodhi or Yu next! Have you tried any of the lip pencils from NARS?

A New Acrylic Set Up

I've never really been such a fan of acrylic make-up storage, I thought it was a bit too modern and simple for my liking, plus with such a large dressing table and 7 drawers, it seemed a bit un-necessary. That was, until I bought one of the lipstick holders on Ebay and I realised just how handy it was having a selection out to choose from every morning. And eventually I got a little drawer set for some of my other products, instead of just using what was in my make-up bag every day which got me into a bit of a rut.

The drawers sadly aren't the biggest, but just good enough to pop in some of my favourite blushes, concealers, mascaras and other little daily essentials. I pop in my favourite products of the moment, and all my spring and summer bits have been coming out which have really brightened up my little corner. I got the little 50s plant pot a month or so ago and had originally planned on using it for a cactus, but my brushes look great stored in there and it's a good size too. Everything looks so much tidier since adding some acrylic to my set up, and of course who doesn't want to be able to gaze over at all the beautiful make-up on display.

Are you a fan of acrylic storage?

Faking Summer Skin

Being pale with oily skin really isn't the greatest combination when spring and summer months come along; sheer bases aren't good enough coverage, and anything too dewy melts off me within seconds on particularly hot days. We're not quite there yet in temperature, but I've really fallen in love with trying to create a pretty natural, sunkissed look to get ready for summer.

The main product pivotal for the look for me is the Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palette*. This is actually the first bronzer I've ever tried, and it's perfect for me. It adds the perfect amount of colour to my face and actually stops me looking so ghost-like. It's got a gorgeous champagne highlighter and a deep pink blush too, making it the perfect palette for summer travel. Before this I add another primer to my routine, the Becca Radiance Primer, which has a tiny bit of shimmer added to give the skin a beautiful glow, as well as helping to keep all my make-up in place too.

If I haven't used the UD palette, my go-to highlight is the No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter Stick. This is so easy to apply, and I find myself popping this on my forehead, brow bone, cheeks, cheekbones, nose and cupids bow! It blends in so nicely and is really undetectable after applying, just giving a lovely light to areas of the face. I haven't used the Revlon Highlighting Palette so much since buying a couple months ago, but I know when the weather gets warmer and I'm not wanting to use so many products that this will be lovely. I have 'Rose Glow' but another one is available if you like more of a bronzed look.

And last, but definitely not least, I love a good peachy blush to give a natural sunkissed look to the skin, and the one I've been reaching for the most recently is the Liz Earle Healthy Glow Cream Blush*. It does just that, creating a beautiful peachy coral sheen to the cheeks, as well as having fantastic lasting power. Obviously I don't use all of these products at once, but all create a lovely sunkissed look, without the sun!

How do you fake summer skin?

Rimmel Pink Rose Lasting Finish Mono Blush

I'm a big fan of Rimmel, but I surprised myself recently that I own none of their blushers! Blushers are actually something I don't have a huge amount of but I'm really getting into recently. Putting 2 and 2 together clearly meant I had to buy one in Boots latest 3 for 2 offers, so I picked up their Pink Rose shade from the Lasting Finish Mono Blush range

I picked up the shade 'Pink Rose' which I thought was possibly the one most suited to my skintone. Sadly the range is quite small so there aren't a great deal to pick from anyway, but I'm really happy with my choice. It's a beautiful peachy pink that gives me a lovely flushed look. It doesn't seem overly shimmery but has a little bit of a sheen. It comes in fairly basic packaging, but you can't expect much for a £3.99 blusher.

Actually my expectations have been raised by this! It's really nicely pigmented, and blends nicely onto the cheeks. It also has pretty decent lasting power; nothing comparable to my favourite NARS blushes, but at a fraction of the price they are really impressive. If you're looking for a drugstore blush for a pretty natural everyday look, I'd definitely recommend this one!

Have you tried any of the Rimmel blushes?

Weekend Wishlist #5

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Despite the horrendous weather I'm really craving adding a couple items to my summer wardrobe, although I wonder whether it'll ever be warm enough to even wear them. I love little cami tops like these, they're so versatile and really feminine. The only thing is how bloomin' expensive they seem to be, £30 for a tiny piece of material is just crazy. I love them with jeans but I think it'd look really pretty with this cute skirt from Dorothy Perkins, they've got some gorgeous ones in at the moment.

I've found some gorgeous summer accessories too; Le Comptoir Scandinave do some really good S.Hasbeens dupes, and although they usually have a much lighter price-tag I seem to have gone for the most expensive ones! It's quite unusual to see them do wedge style sandals, which is probably why I like them so much. I can never resist including a good pair of sunglasses either, these Jeepers Peepers ones are the same sort of style as some Miu Miu ones that came out a couple years ago. I don't ever really wear modern rings either, but these little plaited ones really caught my eye.

I've been really craving popping in a good Body Shop order the past week or so. I've got my eye on the Camomile Cleansing Oil, as well as the new Vineyard Peach collection sounding absolutely delicious. Thanks to Jenny I've got a serious NARS wishlist too, one of their Satin Lip Pencils in Luxembourg is probably going to be my first purchase! What have you got your eye on recently?

Home Snippets, #1

Home decor is something that I love, and I'm always buying new homewares or making little changes to my home, so it's actually a bit of a surprise that I don't really feature it on the blog so much. Every room has a bit of a different theme but I do love my old things and there's a lot of 1950s bits dotted around, which I've been buying a lot of recently.

I've got a bit of a thing for planters at the moment, and just looking around my living room that I'm sat in I have 5 plants, and a couple in my kitchen too. Some cute 50s fabrics have really been brightening up my living room, and I love the lampshade I recovered last month. The addition of a new to me coffee table has really finished off the room.

I've been eyeing up a set of 1950s plastic snack dishes for ages and finally bought them a couple weeks ago. They're handy little dishes for bits and bobs when I don't have snacks, and one is housing a couple lip products I've been really enjoying as my lips have been so dry this week. This is my first try of the Nuxe Reve De Miel and it's definitely love. Let me know if you like posts like these and I'll be sure to include more of my home on my blog!
